Artist Statement
Having spent many years involved in art education and landscape painting, I have developed a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of Leelanau County. We are all blessed to live in an area where man’s footprint has blended naturally into the mosaic of lakes, dunes, forests and wildlife. My goal as an artist is to capture and preserve the visual images that God has created.
Artist Interview
Q: What was your first memorable experience with art?
A: As long as I can remember I have loved to play with color. I was about 7 years old when our neighbor, who was an artist invited me to paint with her in her studio. We painted petunias. The flowers were purple and pink. She opened my mind to a world that I had never encountered. Painting and drawing wasn’t just something children did. Adults loved art and were using wonderful colors to create intriguing images.
Q: Can you explain when you wanted to become an artist? Who/what turned you on to art?
A: Arts and crafts always were activities I gravitated to. My high school offered four years of art classes. The opportunity to explore so many mediums within the class structure with other students was amazing. The experience of working with others focused on similar goals was exciting. My teacher was a young woman who was also an artist, her work and her passion for it created a bridge to the realization that creating beautiful work was important. The idea that other people found joy in this adventure made me realize that I could pursue what I loved! I was an art major in college. The education I received in all those art history classes, plus the studio classes, opened my world. I also was aware that I needed to support myself. I became an elementary art teacher. Along the way, the need to make my own art was still with me. Artists look at the world in a different way. We notice the shape of trees, the color and shape the clouds. We are visual people.
Q: Is there a single piece of artwork that has impacted you?
A: I became fascinated with the Impressionists while studying art history. The colors, brush strokes and their interpretation of the landscape has intrigued and inspired me in my paintings.
Q: What artists influenced you the most?
A: I have found living in Leelanau County with so many artists provides constant new ideas. It is inspiring to live in a place so beautiful and see how fellow artists interpret this glorious place.
Q: What do you like most about the medium and surface you use?
A: I work in oil and acrylic paint, usually on canvas. I paint with oils in my studio and acrylic when I am outdoors or somewhere else. My style is very similar whether I paint in oil or acrylic.
Q: What ideas are behind your current work?
A: I want to capture the seasons, the color and movement and landscape I am surrounded by.
Q: What do you want people to respond to in your work?
A: I want people to respond to the scene. I want to capture the peace and beauty of the landscape. I hope they will respond to the clouds, the water and the sky and find the serenity of the moment.
Q: Do you have a predetermined idea of what your finished work will be like?
A: Not really, I just want to capture the color and light of the moment.

A: My goals for my work are to simplify my technique with larger brush strokes and use of color.
